In the autumn 1949, Nisse and Kajsa’s String shelf won first place in Bonniers’ bookcase competition. Made of blue wall panels and pine shelves, their design beat 194 entries from around Europe, the US and even as far away as Australia. For the 75th anniversary of the String shelf, we’ve produced a limited series of 1949 shelves in the original blue wall panels and shelves in solid pine. Just like the winning design from 1949.

Care & Maintenance

Lacquered and coated steel

Wipe the surface with a cloth. Damp wipe with detergent solution. Then rub dry with a cloth. Remove stains with detergents that do not contain abrasives. Never use steel wool.

Oil treated wood surfaces

Oil treated surfaces are maintained by re-oiling approx. once a year. Wipe the surface with a clean cloth made of non-abrasive material. Grind the surface with a fine paper, size 240-400, in the direction of the fibre. Oil the surface instantly with oil suitable for indoor furniture use. Make sure to put the liquid on the cloth and not directly on the furniture surface. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth and make sure to remove all excess oil. Let it settle for about 12 hours.

Kajsa and Nisse Strinning were a young architect couple in Stockholm when they won their first international design competition with String in 1949. Of course, String went on to become the String® System, and remains one of Sweden's most loved designs, as well as the world’s. Thanks to its elegant simplicity and ingenious construction, String® has earned a place in design history.
